The Anxiety Action Plan...Stop Pretending You're Ok
I don’t know about you but sometimes I feel like I have to act like I'm ok when I’m not. If you’ve ever felt that way, I’m here to tell you it’s time to stop pretending and get real. Now I’m not suggesting you just go around telling everyone what’s wrong with you all the time. What I am suggesting is that you do a real appraisal of those who are safe for you to share what you're actually going through with. Last week we discussed what anxiety is and how to recognize whether its negatively affecting your life. Keep reading for some tips on how to manage anxiety specifically.
Get out of your head and into your body. That’s how I describe the practice of mindfulness. It has been becoming mainstream with adult coloring books, goat yoga, and fidget spinners trending in pop culture. If you’re not into doing yoga and sitting still well guess what, you can practice mindfulness anytime, anywhere. Instead of driving the same route home on autopilot, mix it up and take a different route. Let yourself get lost or notice new restaurants and stores in your area.
Physical activity is KING. The best way to get out of your head and into your body is to move that body of yours around. Hate working out, go dancing, clean the house, take the kids, to the park and play with them. Literally, move your body around more than you are now. The benefits of anxiety are miraculous.
What are you eating? A car will only drive when it had fuel in it. Are you fueling your body with the type of gas it needs? If you are eating the proper fuel, drinking enough water, and sleeping enough then refer to options one and two listed above. Become aware of your body. Can you confidently say you know your bodies specific way of responding to stress?
See a doctor. I would recommend getting blood work and a routine physical because there may be biological factors playing a role in your situation.
